One character is supposed to be this cool headed impossible to anger even in the middle of a fight person, and then they become a typical angry boss who blames the main character for plot convenience. This bleeds into some of the other characters as well. At another point a character who the MC has been established to be refusing to talk to is paired up with her for a mission, and suddenly they're all buddy buddy again. One moment she has her freaking womb removed to make studying easier, the next she avoids practising because someone else is in her spot. One minute she is an intelligent strategist, the next a gullible girl who believes everything she's told - even if that is 'you're a spearli, a person with red eyes that can do magic, even though you don't have red eyes abs we aren't really sure about the magic'. One minute she is hot-headed, the next she is able to reign herself in. It seemed to me she was whatever the author wanted her to be. So besides the weird pacing, what made me drop the book? It was mostly the main character or rather it was consistency in the main character. Up until this point I was mostly enjoying the book, even with its flaws. You can't skip that much time with summary and still feel natural. and then Draco helped the Death Eaters.' because it is rushed. You wouldn't skip books 5 and 6 and summarise it with 'and then they attacked the ministry. A book that does a similar tonal shift much better is Harry Potter, from books 4 to 7. These three parts could easily have been split into a trilogy to make the book flow more naturally. The third is Runin joining the psyche and going off to War The second is a strange, very rushed transitive period which felt completely empty - like the author couldn't be bothered to put anything there because they wanted to get to the action.

The first is Runin getting into school and her first year. Let me explain: the book contains three parts, as far as I read. To me one of the many problems I feel this book has is that it could and should have been a trilogy in its own right. It felt rushed, in the space of a chapter we had a whole new cast, location, and I think there was a time skip but it honestly isn't clear. One of the many reasons I dropped The Poppy War was due to the very rapid and massive tonal shift midway through the book. It markets itself as a story of growth, as a village girl makes it into the school reserved only for the upper classes. The Poppy War is a book I was very excited to read after seeing its summary.
